Against Rent

I met with the students of the Body Design Studio in a vague area in Brno between the highway, the shopping center and the lecture halls of Masaryk University. After some initial hesitation, the students gradually came to terms with the principles of non-hierarchical decision-making and after about an hour they decided by consensus to use the time and space to build a community kitchen. Each of the students then took on any activity and with the help of a drill and a chainsaw, within a short while a shelter with a tarp against the rain, and a bench for sitting and sleeping, a concrete fire pit, a place for the dog, and a pile

of firewood for the bay was created. We cooked lunch together on the fire. During the meal, we discussed how students are dealing with the housing crisis after the increase in rent prices and what methods can be used to cope with such pressures while studying. We left for school with a scent of smoke and a bond of unusual experience that set us apart from the rest. The shelter remained to serve whoever could spot it in the city landscape.
